We just celebrated the 4th of July. As a church we gathered to celebrate our country’s independence as well as entreat Almighty God to mightily work in our fractured land. We talked about four responsibilities of God’s people as we live in two domains; the domain of this earthly world and as citizen of the kingdom of God.
First, we are to pray. I Timothy 2:1-6 instructs us to make prayer a priority, We are to pray for all men, including the leaders of our country, state and local official. Prayer is connecting with God, the one who sovereignly works in the hearts of those in authority. Our prayers matter.
Second, we are to pay. Pay our taxes. Romans 13:6-7 is very clear concerning this citizenship obligation. Public services and security are provided through our tax dollars. We must pray that those in authority are good stewards of the revenue entrusted to them.
Third, we are to preach. Ephesians 4:15 tells us to speak the truth in love. There are times when we speak out against injustice or evil. We are to always to do it with grace. There are times when we cannot be silent. Also, we must preach the Gospel. Thank the Lord that we have that freedom during these days. We must take advantage of that freedom.
Fourth and last, we must participate. As believers we live godly lives for God’s glory, not giving a cause of offense to the world in which we live because of our unchristlike behavior. Matthew 5:13-16 tells us that we are the “salt of the earth and the light of the world.” As we engage society, we do so seeking to be the hands, feet and voice of Jesus. We are to help others to be thirsty for God who created them. We are to influence the lost world around us as we walk humbly and holy with or Savior. We are shine brightly as we go through each day, “Making Much of Jesus.!
It is a privilege to be an American. But it is a greater privilege to a citizen of the kingdom of God. May we all seek to make a difference in our great land.
